How long should my podcast episode be?

In this blog, we analyse the approximate length we believe podcast episodes should be!

We at Mic Up will not tell you how long a podcast episode should be, but from our experience as content creators and consumers, we can safely say that 30 minutes for a podcast episode or even radio show, is the near perfect length.

We will list two main reasons why we believe this.

  1. Downloadability - The shorter the episode, the easier it will be to download. You may be proud of a 3 hour episode, but the truth is, if it is too long, the other person can only listen to it on a platform and not download it. A successful podcast relies on consistent downloads, so this should be an important factor before you create content. It is therefore important that your content is the appropriate length, to ensure that listeners can easily download it to their devices.

  2. Attention span - Due to the constant stream of audio content, which is brief and short, there is therefore the ever increasing demand for concise yet engaging content. As a result, this means that as a content creator, it is your responsibility to ensure that the content you create, is to the point as much as possible, to ensure that people do not get too bored easily. (Our workshop will explore this further.)

In conclusion, we believe that though there are many podcasts, which have episodes lasting for longer than 30+ minutes, we highly recommend if you're starting out, to keep the episode length under 30 minutes, to ensure that your content is direct, straight to the point and easy for your listeners to download!
